Why I Think in Maps, Not Linear Notes

Why spatial thinking beats linear note-taking for understanding complex systems, and how to train yourself to think in maps.

Question

Why do some people naturally think in outlines and others in diagrams? And more importantly --- can you train yourself to think in maps?

Context

For most of my education, I was taught to think in outlines. Essays have a thesis and three supporting points. Notes have a hierarchy. Arguments go from A to B to C. This is the legacy of the written page: a linear medium that rewards linear thinking.

But the world is not linear. Systems have feedback loops. Causes have multiple effects. Networks have hubs and bridges. A linear model of a non-linear world produces bad predictions and brittle understanding.

Map

Spatial thinking has several distinct advantages over linear note-taking:

  1. Relationships over categories --- A map shows how things connect, not just how they fit into buckets. The connection is often more important than the thing itself.
  2. Emergence --- Maps reveal patterns that aren’t visible in a list. A cluster of related nodes, a missing connection, a bottleneck --- these emerge from spatial arrangement.
  3. Scale flexibility --- A good map works at multiple scales. You can zoom in on a detail or zoom out for the big picture. A linear document forces a single resolution.
  4. Memory --- Spatial memory is remarkably strong. I can remember where something was on a map years later. I cannot remember where something was on page 47 of a document.

Interpretation

The shift from linear to spatial thinking is not just a different note-taking technique. It’s a different epistemology --- a different theory of what it means to know something.

Linear knowing: “I know this topic because I can list its components in order.”

Spatial knowing: “I know this topic because I can navigate its connections without getting lost.”

The second is more robust. It handles complexity better. It generates better questions. It is also harder to teach and harder to test, which is why our education system mostly ignores it.

Modern Connection

Tools like Obsidian, Roam, and Notion are popularizing networked thinking, but the tool is not the practice. A Roam graph is not the same as a mental model. The real shift is in how we train ourselves to see the world: as a set of interacting systems rather than a collection of separate facts.

This is especially important in an age of AI. An LLM can give you a list of facts about anything. What it cannot do (yet) is build the map that shows you which facts matter and why.

Open Questions

  • Can spatial thinking be taught systematically, or is it something people have to discover on their own?
  • What does a spatial-first education look like?
  • As AI tools get better at mapping knowledge, will humans lose the skill of building their own mental maps --- or will the skill become more valuable?
